COATS FOR KIDS

The leaves will soon change colors and the temperature will drop, meaning only one thing—Minnesota’s long cold winter is coming and many children are without warm coats. The Salvation Army needs new or gently used winter coats to keep needy children in the Twin Cities warm this winter. The annual Coats for Kids drive is September 29 - October 12 with a goal of collecting 7,000 winter coats.

For 23 years, the Coats for Kids program – a joint effort of The Salvation Army and 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS – has provided coats for Twin Cities’ children. More than 264,000 coats and winter accessories have been distributed to Twin Cities’ children through Coats for Kids since the program began.

“Every year our social services offices see an increase in the number of children without adequate winter-wear,” said Major Darryl Leedom, Twin Cities’ commander of The Salvation Army. “It’s hard to believe we’ve distributed more than 264,000 winter coats and accessories since Coats for Kids began, but we must continue adding to that number to keep our kids safe and warm each winter."

Families in need of coats should call the Coats for Kids Hotline at 651-746-3412 for coat boutique location information. Coat boutiques will be open October 28-29.
