PRESS RELEASE
Mitt Romney to Serve Breakfast at Homeless Shelter
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – September 1, 2008 – Mitt Romney will pause from his busy Republican National Convention schedule to volunteer at The Salvation Army’s Harbor Light Shelter in downtown Minneapolis, located at 1010 Currie Ave., on Tuesday, Sept. 2 from 7 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.
The former Massachusetts governor and former candidate for the 2008 Republican presidential election nomination will serve breakfast to hundreds of Harbor Light residents enrolled in the facility’s life skills and rehabilitation programs.
“We are extremely excited to have Mitt Romney volunteer for us and witness firsthand how decisions made at the highest levels of government can create positive, enduring change on the frontlines of poverty, homelessness and addiction,” said Envoy Bill Miller, Harbor Light administrator.
The Salvation Army is proud to host such a prestigious political figure, especially considering Harbor Light’s close relationship with government agencies. Harbor light is on the forefront of the state’s Heading Home Minnesota initiative, which aims to end long-term homelessness by 2010. The award-winning facility is Hennepin County’s largest contracted provider of shelter beds, accounting for almost 400 of the nearly 1,200 beds the county supports.
To fill even more needs, Harbor Light recently began construction on a 6,000-square-foot expansion that will link the homeless with employment, permanent housing, legal aid and free health care. The facility has also secured a grant to purchase a new off-site housing facility for homeless veterans.
The Salvation Army serves more than 200,000 people in the Twin Cities and is a safety net for those with no place to turn. We serve 2,100 hot meals every day and house more than 850 people every night. To volunteer with The Salvation Army or to make a credit card donation, call 651-746-3400 or 1-800-SAL-ARMY.
