Salvation Army Continues Tropical Storm Fay Response While Preparing for Gustav
August 28, 2008 – This past weekend Salvation Army emergency disaster services (EDS) personnel and mobile feeding units (canteens) from throughout the state were on the frontlines of the flooding disaster from Tropical Storm Fay in northeast Florida providing almost 10,000 meals, 6,000 refreshments, 6,000 clean-up kits and countless encouraging words to residents and emergency workers in seven locations. The Salvation Army has begun case management to serve flood-affected residents, many of whom have become displaced and lost everything, including hope. In the meanwhile, EDS teams are preparing for Tropical Storm Gustav.
Captain Tom Louden, incident commander for East/Central Florida operations, said, “We’re an answer to the needs of this community. People are walking up to the canteens with the look of ‘What do I do next?’ on their faces. The canteens have become an oasis of hope and an answer to their prayers.” EDS personnel and Salvation Army officers (pastors) are often asked to pray with residents, he continued.
The Salvation Army serves in more than 100 countries and provides both immediate emergency assistance and long-term recovery help in the event of any disaster. Funds for The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services come from corporate and private donations given specifically for disaster relief.
