$5k Up For Grabs: The Salvation Army’s
MOST Amazing Race Kicks Off Tomorrow

Secret race locations available to media upon request

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – July 23, 2010 The Salvation Army’s 5th annual MOST Amazing Race starts tomorrow. The gun fires at 2 p.m., when 28 teams of two will begin scrambling across Minneapolis to perform mental and physical challenges at popular local venues in this official Minneapolis Aquatennial event. Past challenges have included climbing rock walls, eating disgusting foods, ice skating, scouring museums for artifacts, singing, dancing and much more.

The race begins and ends at the Stone Arch Bridge. Teams should begin crossing the finish line at about 6 p.m.

A 10 a.m. qualifying event will be held the morning of the race at the University of Minnesota Bierman Track and Field Stadium. Forty-four teams will compete in the qualifier, a small-scale version of the main race. Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Pat Williams is scheduled to staff one of the qualifier challenges. The top 20 teams at the qualifier go on to compete in the MOST Amazing Race.

Another eight teams have already qualified for the race by raising at least $2,000. In total, teams have raised a combined $43,500 – more than any other year. The MOST Amazing Race benefits The Salvation Army's Bed and Bread Club®, which helps alleviate hunger and homelessness in the Twin Cities.

Racers’ ages range from 19 to 57, with some coming to compete from as far away as Highlands Ranch, Colo. in the west and Springfield, Ill. in the east. Several teams came up with creative ways to raise money, from auctioning off dates with their friends to bleaching their hair if their fund-raising goal was met. The top fund-raising duo was “Oozing Monkeys,” a Minneapolis husband/wife team in their mid-30s. They won two Delta Airlines tickets after raising $4,125.

Though all of the race challenges and their locations are a secret, the information is available to the media upon request. For more information, please call Annette Bauer at 651-238-8210.
