Shhh, don’t tell: Vikings’ Pat Williams at secret race challenge
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – July 16, 2010 –With the 2010 Minneapolis Aquatennial kicking off today, time is short to register for one of its official events – The Salvation Army’s MOST Amazing Race, a fund-raising event patterned after the popular reality TV show.
Now in its fifth year, the July 24 race will feature qualifying teams of two performing mental and physical challenges at popular locations across Minneapolis, beginning and ending at the Stone Arch Bridge. The first team to reach the finish line wins $5,000 courtesy of Wells Fargo. The top fund-raising team wins two Delta Airlines tickets.
Race registration ends Wednesday, July 21 at 11:59 p.m. To register or for more information, click here.
Up to 30 teams may qualify for the race in one of two ways: by being one of the top 10 fund-raising teams that raise more than $2,000, or by being a top finisher at a qualifying event held the morning of the race. The qualifying event is a small-scale version of the main race and is held at the University of Minnesota Bierman Track and Field Stadium. To be eligible for the qualifying event, racers must raise at least $200 before the registration deadline of July 21.
Though all race challenges are classified, one secret is out: Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Pat Williams will staff a challenge location during the qualifying event.
“He’s used to tackling football players – now he’s helping The Salvation Army tackle hunger and homelessness,” said Major Darryl Leedom, commander of the Twin Cities Salvation Army. “Many thanks to Mr. Williams for helping us serve Twin Cities residents in need by being a part of our fifth-annual MOST Amazing race.”
The MOST Amazing Race benefits The Salvation Army's Bed and Bread Club®, which helps alleviate hunger and homelessness in the Twin Cities. The race has raised more than $170,000 since 2006.
Almost 180 racers have registered for this year’s event. Their ages range from 18 to 60, with some coming to compete from as far away as Highlands Ranch, Colo. in the west and Springfield, Ill. in the east. Several teams came up with creative ways to raise money, from auctioning off dates with their friends to bleaching their hair if their fund-raising goals were met.
The Twin Cities Salvation Army serves more than 200,000 people a year through its 25 local centers of operation. Daily it serves 2,000 hot meals and shelters 850 people. More than 14,000 local volunteers help The Salvation Army provide a multitude of services, from child daycare to senior housing.
