PRESS RELEASE
The Salvation Army Opens South Minneapolis
Housing Facilities for Homeless Vets
Grand opening June 21 at 11:30 a.m.
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – June 15, 2010 – The veterans will receive case management from a full-time, onsite Salvation Army social worker and from staff at the nearby Minneapolis VA Medical Center.
“These new facilities are a big step forward in The Salvation Army’s ongoing efforts to serve homeless veterans,” said Major Darryl Leedom, commander of the Twin Cities Salvation Army. “Not only will the 10 veterans receive our constant support, they will have access to medical care that is within walking distance.”
Including the 10 new units, the Twin Cities Salvation Army manages 45 metro area transitional housing units for formerly homeless veterans and others working toward self-sufficiency. Residents can stay up to two years, during which time Salvation Army social workers help them stabilize, find employment and secure permanent housing.
The Salvation Army purchased the two new properties with its own money and with $325,000 from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Donnelly Stucco made a significant donation toward exterior renovations. The 10 units were furnished thanks to donations from Best Buy, Thomas-Grace Construction and Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau.
A grand opening is scheduled for June 21 from 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. at the new housing facilities, located at 5746 and 5750 Sander Dr. in Minneapolis. Tours and lunch will be provided. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m.
“The Salvation Army deeply appreciates the generosity of our partners for helping us make this project a reality,” Leedom said. “Through their giving spirit, The Salvation Army is able to provide long-term support to 10 brave men and women who sacrificed themselves for this country.”
The Twin Cities Salvation Army serves more than 200,000 people a year through its 25 local centers of operation. Daily it serves 2,000 hot meals and shelters 850 people. More than 14,000 local volunteers help The Salvation Army provide a multitude of services, from child daycare to senior housing.
