The Salvation Army Receives $30,000
Grant from Minneapolis Foundation

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – June 4, 2009 – The Salvation Army HeatShare program of the Twin Cities received a $30,000 grant June 2 from The Minneapolis Foundation through the organization’s “Crisis Assistance Fund.”

Salvation Army HeatShare provides heat and utility assistance for families in need. The program has assisted 260,000 people since it began 26 years ago. In the past two years, the average unpaid bill of HeatShare recipients has jumped nearly 200 percent.

“We are extremely thankful to The Minneapolis Foundation and its donors for their generosity, dedication and shared mission of serving people in need,” said Major Darryl Leedom, Commander of the Twin Cities Salvation Army.

The Crisis Assistance Fund was established this year to provide $500,000 for immediate food, energy and housing assistance for Twin Cities residents most affected by the current economic downturn. The Salvation Army was among nine local service agencies benefitting from the fund.

“The Crisis Assistance Fund has helped donors make a bigger impact by combining and leveraging their contributions, and by directing donations to programs that can provide immediate services to people in need,” said Don Taylor, vice president for development and client services at The Minneapolis Foundation.

The Twin Cities Salvation Army serves more than 200,000 people every year. To volunteer with The Salvation Army or to make a credit card donation, call 651-746-3400 or 1-800-SAL-ARMY.
