The Salvation Army Launches Appeal
for Sichuan Earthquake Relief
May 13, 2008 -- The strongest earthquake to hit China in more than three decades struck in Sichuan Province yesterday. The tremor measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale left at least 10,000 dead. A substantial number of houses and schools were collapsed, hundreds of thousands people were injured and many were buried under the rubble. The Salvation Army Hong Kong and Macau Command initially transferred RMB 100,000 to meet the most urgent needs. An Emergency Relief Team has hurried to the affected areas to help the desperate survivors by providing them with food and relief supplies.
The Salvation Army disaster relief workers in mainland China and Hong Kong will leave to Chengdu, Sichuan Province tomorrow. It is expected that the emergency relief team will arrive at the affected areas by this Thursday. The Salvation Army will immediately deliver food to the survivors and find out their needs in order to distribute the most urgent relief supplies. The Salvation Army personnel will conduct a comprehensive on-site assessment for further emergency relief efforts to the earthquake victims. Application will be sent to the HKSAR Government Disaster Relief Fund for this relief operation. The amount of grant the Army request will be confirmed when the on-site evaluations were conducted.
The Salvation Army is committed to providing emergency assistance to the survivors until their needs are fulfilled. The Army will work with the mainland relief authority, the local relief agencies and the HKSAR Government for the operation of the emergency relief.
