PRESS RELEASE
Nashville Salvation Army Staff and Volunteers Take Relief to Hurting Communities
Nashville, TN – May 7, 2010 – Salvation Army personnel continue to partner with local authorities to provide relief to flood victims in their communities. The Office of Emergency Management has established information centers in the hardest hit areas of the city – the Bellevue Community Center, Coleman Community Center and Hadley Community Center. The Salvation Army is on hand at each location to provide food, water and spiritual support.
In addition, The Salvation Army is providing the same services for those working at the Office of Emergency Management as well as to emergency responders working out of the Metro Police Department’s Southeast Precinct. These services are scheduled to continue through the weekend.
As flood waters recede, Salvation Army mobile kitchens (canteens) will advance directly into the devastated neighborhoods. A canteen crew from Jackson, Tennessee will arrive on Friday to continue the work begun by Sergeant Alvez Gonzalez in the Illinois Ave. neighborhood. A canteen crew from Madisonville, Kentucky is providing services out of the Nashville Area Command’s Citadel Corps.
Outside the city, Emergency Disaster Services crews from Murfreesboro are serving flood victims in Antioch, TN and a crew from Paducah, Kentucky is serving victims in the Clarksville area.
Please continue to pray for the victims of what some are calling a “thousand year flood”. Twenty-seven counties in Tennessee have been declared a disaster area. The mayor estimates the damage in the Nashville area alone to be in the neighborhood of $1 Billion.
