PRESS RELEASE
Comcast Helping The Salvation Army
Plant Gardens, Paint Walls, Assist Seniors
“Comcast Cares Day” volunteers taking action April 25
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – April 24, 2009 – On Saturday, April 25, dozens of Comcast Cares Day volunteers will paint a homeless shelter, plant a garden, and clean up the yards of senior citizens on behalf of the Twin Cities Salvation Army.
Now in its eighth year, Comcast Cares Day is a nationwide effort helping nonprofits upgrade their facilities and serve others through the help of 50,000 company volunteers. In the Twin Cities, more than 1,400 volunteers will serve at 50 nonprofit sites.
From 8 a.m. – 12 p.m., 40 of the volunteers will descend on the Central Ave. Salvation Army in Northeast Minneapolis (2727 Central Ave.). Some will help create a 2,300-square-foot, on-site garden that will be used to show low-income families how to grow their own food. Others will do yard work at nearby homes occupied by seniors unable to perform springtime cleaning such as raking, cleaning gutters and washing windows.
“One of these seniors is a woman who is nearly deaf and nearly blind,” said Major Darryl Leedom, Commander of the Twin Cities Salvation Army. “She had been looking for someone to help clean her yard. When she found out Comcast volunteers would be coming over, she was very happy and thankful.”
Another 30 volunteers will paint an entire floor of the The Salvation Army Harbor Light Shelter in downtown Minneapolis (1010 Currie Ave.).
“The helping hands of Comcast Cares Day volunteers will allow Harbor Light to serve people in surroundings everyone can be proud of,” Leedom said.
“Comcast is proud to be an active member of the Twin Cities community, and Comcast Cares Day is our commitment to improving the quality of life in communities we serve,” said Mary Beth Schubert, Comcast’s vice president of corporate communications. “There is nothing more rewarding than giving back, and I’m grateful to the hundreds of Comcast volunteers who will be donating their time to help make such a big difference.”
The Twin Cities Salvation Army serves more than 200,000 people every year. To volunteer with The Salvation Army or to make a credit card donation, call 651-746-3400 or 1-800-SAL-ARMY.
