Roundy’s Foundation Gives Cash, 3,000 Pounds of Food
to NE Mpls Salvation Army
Pickup being made at Rainbow Foods in New Brighton on April 14 at noon
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – April 13, 2010 – The Roundy’s Foundation is giving the Northeast Minneapolis Salvation Army 3,000 pounds of food and $500 for the facility’s food pantry, which is experiencing an increase in demand due to the economy.
The Salvation Army will pick up the donation at noon on April 14 at the Rainbow Foods in New Brighton, 1540 New Brighton Blvd.
“The Salvation Army appreciates the support given to us by the Roundy’s Foundation, Rainbow Foods grocery stores and their employees,” said Major Darryl Leedom, commander of the Twin Cities Salvation Army. “Their generosity will go a long way toward feeding families living in Northeast Minneapolis.”
The Northeast Minneapolis Salvation Army food pantry serves thousands of people a year. In March 2010 alone it distributed more than 13,000 pounds of food to nearly 900 people.
The Roundy’s Foundation donation is being made through “Roundy's Foundation: Focused on Feeding Families,” an annual five-day tour that provides $225,000 in food and money to 50 food pantries across Minnesota and Wisconsin. The foundation is part of Milwaukee, Wis.-based Roundy's Supermarkets Inc., which owns Rainbow Foods grocery stores throughout the Twin Cities.
“Our food tours help us relieve hunger in the communities our stores serve, but they also give our employees an opportunity to give back,” said Robert Mariano, chairman and CEO of Roundy's Supermarkets and president of the Roundy's Foundation. “Our employees live and work in their communities, and nothing is more rewarding to them than being able to help their neighbors.”
The Twin Cities Salvation Army serves more than 200,000 people a year through its 25 local centers of operation. Daily it serves 2,000 hot meals and shelters 850 people. More than 14,000 local volunteers help The Salvation Army provide a multitude of services, from child daycare to senior housing.
