PRESS RELEASE

Twin Cities Salvation Army Twin Cities Salvation Army Medical Trip to Haiti Cancelled

February 22, 2010 – The international Salvation Army made a last minute cancellation of the Twin Cities medical team which was scheduled to depart on Tuesday. Both RN's who were scheduled to spend two weeks in Haiti are on hold indefinitely.

Salvation Army leadership made the decision due to the rapidly changing landscape of disaster aid in Haiti. The UN has stepped up its medical coordination to include large areas like the tent cities surrounding The Salvation Army compound in Port-au-Prince. In addition, the Salvation Army Port-au-Prince clinic saw a marked decrease in patients coming for assistance and most of the care was down-graded to wound management. Therefore the clinic, which had expanded into the Salvation Army school room space, has downsized so that school classes could expand.

"While we are disappointed for our volunteers, we understand the fluid nature of disaster work and obligation to react to the needs of the community," said Colonel Daniel Sjogren, divisional commander of Minnesota and North Dakota Salvation Army. "These are signs of life getting back to normal for the Haitian people and that is a very good thing."
