Ardmore, Oklahoma Salvation Army Continues Relief Efforts
February 17, 2009 –The Salvation Army continues to provide assistance to those impacted by the deadly tornado that hit Lone Grove, Oklahoma on Tuesday evening, February 10. A large number of families and individuals are displaced and are trying to ascertain how they will rebuild their lives.
It has been announced that 118 homes completely destroyed, 28 with major damage, and 37 others that received damage. These numbers do not include businesses that received damage or were destroyed. As our mobile feeding units (canteens) roam the devastated area with hot meals, snacks and beverages, they also offer comforting words of hope.
The Salvation Army began today by providing a hot breakfast of biscuits and gravy. Lunch and dinner is being provided also. Through yesterday evening, a little over 5,000 meals were served. In addition to meals, snacks and hot or cold beverages are provided. Those impacted by the storm are also offered comfort kits that include paper goods, toiletry items, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other household items.
The temporary shelter established in Ardmore closed as of Friday.
The Salvation Army is making emergency shelter available as many individuals and/or families do not have funds to stay in hotels or have nearby family members with whom to stay temporarily. As transition begins to longer term recovery, The Salvation Army will offer social services to help storm victims get back on their feet as well as providing emotional and spiritual care.
